What is Open Spa Data?
Open Spa Data (OSD) is a free, open standard that helps estheticians export and keep their own client records. That includes SOAP notes, intake forms, progress photos, treatment history, and appointment records. The standard is built so any spa or salon software can read or write the same files — so your records can move with you.
Who is Open Spa Data for?
OSD is for solo estheticians, spa owners, and wellness practitioners who want to own their own client data. If you've ever worried about losing years of treatment notes because your software costs went up, your platform shut down, or you wanted to switch tools, OSD is for you.
How much does it cost?
OSD is free. The standard is free to use, the reference exporter is free to download, and there's no account to create. You don't pay us, and we don't upload your data anywhere.
Which spa software does it work with today?
Today, OSD exports work with Vagaro, GlossGenius, and Square through one free Chrome extension. We're working on support for Boulevard, Mangomint, Zenoti, Fresha, and Mindbody next. If your software isn't listed, you can still ask its team to add OSD support.
What kind of records does it export?
Your client profiles, SOAP notes, intake forms, signed consent forms, progress photos, treatment history, and appointments. The exact list depends on what each platform makes available.
Where does my exported data go?
To your own computer, as a single zip file. Nothing is sent to Open Spa Data, SpaSphere, or any cloud server. There is no Open Spa Data account, no login, and no upload step.
Is this safe? Does my software know I'm exporting?
The extension only reads the pages and photos you can already see while you're logged in to Vagaro, GlossGenius, or Square. It doesn't use hidden APIs, doesn't store your password, and never changes or deletes anything in your account. It works at the same pace a real person would, one page at a time with short pauses in between, and the export is saved straight to your computer as a zip file. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.
Can I import this data into another spa platform?
That's the goal. Any software that supports OSD can read the file. SpaSphere supports OSD imports today. Other platforms can add support — the format is open and free for them to use.
Why does this exist?
Most spa software keeps your client records locked inside the platform. If you leave, you often have to start over. That's bad for practitioners and bad for clients who trust you with years of treatment history. OSD gives that ownership back to you.
Who runs Open Spa Data?
OSD is an open standard. SpaSphere is the founding supporter — we write the spec, ship the free exporter, and host the website. But the standard itself is free for any software company to support, and we welcome others to help shape it.
How do I get started?
Download the free Chrome extension from the link on this page, sign in to your spa software like you normally would, and run the export. You'll get a zip file on your computer with all your records inside.
What format is the export file in?
A single zip archive that contains your records as structured JSON files (so they're easy for any system to read), plus your photo files saved by their content. There's a manifest at the top that lists what's inside and which version of OSD the file uses. The full technical details are published at openspadata.org/spec.
